Baby Update: My Relentless Hunger

IMG_3114

Sixteen weeks and baby is already the size of an avocado! Although it’s only been a week since my last update, I feel like so much has happened. From growing in size to relentless stomach growls of hunger to baby’s first flutter kicks (well sort of). This week I am sixteen weeks along in my pregnancy and still feeling great. Here’s how things are going; I wonder if I am experiencing the same things as other women?

Even as I am sitting here typing this out, having eaten breakfast only two hours ago, my stomach is growling at me to eat a second round of breakfast. It seems this has been the continual theme around here—second rounds of breakfast. If you know me during my pregnancy you know exactly what I am talking about, and might even be laughing at the fact that I’ve shared some pretty funny breakfast stories with you.

The second breakfast routine came about when I started going to workout class in the mornings. Now that I have established a morning routine where I eat breakfast before I go work out, I still come home ravenously hungry for a second breakfast. I’m talking two full-course meals within three hours of each other. I don’t think I have ever experienced something to this extent (except for maybe my college years when I was on the dance team and we worked out consistently).

I’ve always loved breakfast, it’s my favorite meal of the day, but recently my true love for scrambled eggs has really made it’s appearance. As many of you already know through my vlogs and Justin’s vlogs on YouTube, my only pregnancy cravings have been scrambled eggs on a large tortilla with Cholula sauce. Every. Single. Day. Sometimes it’s three or four eggs depending on how hungry I am.

Here’s why I am okay with that craving. It’s pretty much a balanced and complete meal if you break it down. The eggs contain both a good source of protein and fats that help keep you satiated longer than simple carbohydrates. The tortilla, depending on what kind, is a source of carbohydrates to fuel my energy. The Cholula, well that’s just for good taste and gives it a kick for my taste buds. Eggs are full of other essential nutrients that baby needs such as biotin, choline, iodine, riboflavin, and phosphorus. Overall, the typical pregnancy cravings have remained dormant, at least until now.

Since my energy levels have been pretty high during my pregnancy, I have felt good enough to work out at least four to five times a week. It’s healthy for baby and myself knowing I am getting my heart rate up and working my muscles. However, my typical workouts before pregnancy were always self-competitive—meaning my mentality is pretty focus-driven during physical activity. I like to compete with myself and give every workout a run for its money, especially when I am paying to go to the class. Understandably so, even my doctors have told me my workout plans need to be down-graded to a lower level while pregnant. So the conundrum of wanting to go harder in my workout classes has left me feeling like a slacker when I restrict myself from certain movements. However, securing the safety of my baby is my top priority even if that means slacking on my abdominal workouts for the time being.

It’s a whole new ball game, having to relearn a few things with each passing day. Unfortunately, I think that’s just life teaching me how to be flexible and comfortable with all the changes to come. So for now, I will just go with the flow and learn as I grow.
